The steady globalization of economic activity over the last few decades has intensified the reassertion of the region as critical locus of economic order and a foundation of competitive advantage. This process, being crucial for the world economy, is determining the management of geopolitics and space economics on micro- and macro levels. To that, the course Economic Geography and International Relations will provide geographical knowledge to broaden the worldview and strategic competence in valuation of spatial structures and international relations. Applying the methods of both sciences, it is mainly targeted to develop critical thinking and understanding towards interdependence of global economic issues, cultural differences and regional integration. As all human activities have spatial, political, historical and cultural implications, Economic Geography and International Relations will reflect the living space of humans, their activities towards structural and cultural formation of economic space. Particularly, Economic Geography and International Relations will exemplify aforementioned aspects highlighting regions and countries from all continents by analyzing their political and economic structure and cross border relations. With the conceptual approach of linking theory and practice, the principles of Economic Geography and International Relations will be applied to undertake policy formulation for the economic management of current world issues.

This course examines the politics of international economic relations, or globalization. Recurring questions in the course include: "What is the relationship between politics and economic performance?", "Why do government adopt the economic policies they do?", "What causes economic conflict among nations?", "Why do states manage to cooperate economically in some cases but not others?", and "Why do governments promote or oppose globalization under different circumstances?" In particular, we will study international trade policy and protectionism, exchange rate regimes and capital mobility, financial crises and stabilization in developing countries, foreign investment and multinational corporations, regional economic integration, and the effects of globalization on environmental and labor standards. For each topic, we will consider theoretical explanations along with historical and contemporary examples.

In this course we extend the ideas and tools developed in intermediate microeconomics to the study of international economic relations. We begin by studying a number of simple models of trade between nations that attempt to explain that trade in terms of a small number of basic facts about the economic conditions characterizing nations: technology, tastes, and endowments of factors of production. Using these simple models as our tools, we turn to an examination of the arguments for free trade and protection. We finish the course with an anlysis of some of the political and institutional details of trade policy making and implementation, with a particular focus on the US. Not only will this analysis help us to better understand one of the premier economic issues of the day, but it will increase our familiarity and facility with the models developed in the first part of the course.
