The course examines the microeconomics of international trade. First we examine the gains from trade, the determinants of patterns of international trade and the effects of trade on income distribution, all in low-dimensional models. We then turn to policy and analyse a number of arguments, both traditional and more recent, for active trade and industrial policies. We will consider preferential trading areas and then look at some recent developments in the theory of trade in the presence of increasing returns to scale.

"Problems of International Relations" examines conflict and war in the international system using the concepts and analytic techniques developed in academic international relations. The course draws on the conceptual framework introduced in POL 101 and, occasionally, on methodological techniques discussed in POL 201. You must have taken both of these courses or their equivalents.
"Problems of International Relations" begins with a survey of the history of war and its analysis. In this first section, we will read a series of case studies of major wars in the 20th century. The second section turns to the causes of war and a more detailed look at one of our cases – Israel/Palestine. Many theories have been developed to explain war, ranging from the anarchical structure of the international system to the instinctive pugnacity of human beings. This, of course, is the central question for the study of war. In other sections we will discuss morality in war, the role of international law, the struggle for peace, economic factors, and the actual experience of war. The course will be a mixture of lecture and discussion.

A more exciting time to study China's international relations would be hard to imagine: THey've been hyping it for years, but finally it's true. An economy that sustains 22% of the world's population continued until 1998 to grow at an average annual rate of 9% - a pace sustained for 20 years. Such rapid growth is historically unprecedented for any time and place, and has fuelled a dizzying array of cultural, social, and political changes that make CHina exceptionally chaggenging to understsand. It's also helped to build an increasingly powerful military machine that many of CHina's neighbours fear. The ultimate effects of "the rise of China" on the world system is the central question facing policy makers, the business cummunitym and analysts of all stripes today. Naturally, it's an especially urgent concern for those of us who live on the Pacific Rim.
THe chief goal of this course is simply and straightforwardly to help you develop a sophisticated and nuanced understanding of the myraid issues surrounding China's sudden emergence to global prominence, while at the same time stimulation you to reflect upon the deeper implications. |
