This course is a broad survey of the field of international business, focusing on the international environment of business. Since international business cuts across all business disciplines (e.g., accounting, information systems, finance, management, marketing) it should be of broad interest throughout the College. Students gain an appreciation for the complexities of the international environment facing businesses at the beginning of the 21st century, as firms simultaneously face pressures to "go global" in response to global markets and global competitors, and to "think local" because of distinctive national cultures and governments. |

This course is both theoretical and practical; it is designed to develop student understanding of the issues, opportunities, and complexities associated with doing
business internationally. The focus is primarily on the international business environment and the activities of multinational corporations, but many subjects covered in
the course are important to even the smallest of companies, including those that operate in a purely domestic context. Among the topics to be covered during the semester are foreign direct investment, international trade, firm and country competitiveness, regional trade associations,
international institutions, managerial functions in an international context, organizational and national cultures, and global marketing and financial management. Though
most of the material covered is not conceptually difficult, a challenging aspect of this course is its breadth. Almost every aspect of business management is covered in
an international context. Upon successful completion of the course, you should possess an awareness of the global business environment, and you should be able to
demonstrate analytical and strategic thinking skills that reflect an understanding of global business competition. With regard to teaching style, the course depends on a combination of lectures, student presentations, interactive participation, and both individual and group
exercises. Thus, regular attendance, appropriate expressions of interest, and meaningful contributions to class activities are expected, valued, and will be rewarded.
You are expected to read assigned materials before class, should be eager to politely discuss relevant topics in class, and should expect to be periodically called
upon to answer questions or provide other input. Class activities are designed to supplement, rather than replace, the textbook. |

This course examines the environment of international business, foreign trade, and the operations of multinational enterprises. Management, marketing, accounting, and financial issues unique to enterprises operating in varying economic, cultural, and political/legal environments are investigated. Since there has been an explosion in the volume of world trade over the past thirty years, it is essential for businesspeople to understand why this has happened and what impact the globalization of business has had on large and small firms, as well as on U.S. government trade and foreign policy. Whether you work for a large multinational or for a small, rural enterprise, global trade offers both the opportunities of new markets or new sources of supply, and the threat of competition from foreign firms entering the market. This course helps you to understand how world trade has evolved, what the major markets are today and how to get information about them, and which countries are expected to dominate world trade in the first half of the 21st century |

SEMINAR IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

The course is a broad survey of the theory and practice of international business, with an emphasis on the theories and models that are used to explain IB
phenomena. The first part of the course reviews environmental differences and the diverse economic, social, political, cultural, legal, financial and technological dimensions of
international business. This is followed by an examination of global trade and investment, and the global monetary system. The final part of the course explores the strategic issues of
international business – why and how firms decide to operate beyond their domestic borders – and there will be a limited discussion of the functional areas of international business.
From your study of the articles on the extended reading list and through class discussion, you will be expected to be able to (1) trace the development of IB theory over the past 40
years; (2) identify the main theories that explain international trade and the existence of multinational enterprises; and (3) discuss the strengths and weakness of current theories and
models of IB. |
