Motherhood, Apple Pie & Stock Options--INC |
| |
URL:
http://www.inc.com/incmagazine/article/0,,ART870,00.html |
| |
The site examines stock options as they affect high-tech companies and their employees. On July 1, 1999, The San Francisco Chronicle reported that 42 local companies, mainly Internet start-ups, had gone public in the preceding six months with the astounding gain of 138 percent. Throughout the Silicon Valley, employees of computer companies are hedging their bets, hoping that the companies they work for will be the next eBay or Amazon. However, the chances of striking it rich through Internet stock options are slim. High-tech employees move from company to company looking for better options at promising start-ups, while computer companies improve their option packages in order to entice their workers to stay. The resource provides news, articles, and background information on the lures and pitfalls of Internet stock options. According to "Motherhood, Apple Pie & Stock Options," an article from INC Magazine, stock options may not make good business sense either. Many employees and managers are unclear as to how stock options work, and so INC has also included a beginner's guide to understanding stock options.

NBER Working Paper No. W7365: The Future of EMU: What Does the History of Monetary Unions Tell Us? |
| |
URL:
http://papers.nber.org/papers/W7365.pdf |
| |
The creation of EMU and the ECB has triggered a discussion of the future of EMU. Independent observers have pointed to a number of shortcomings or hazard areas' in the construction of EMU, such as the absence of a central lender of last resort function for EMU, the lack of a central authority supervising the financial systems of EMU, unclear and inconsistent policy guidelines for the ECB, the absence of central co-ordination of fiscal policies within EMU, unduly strict criteria for domestic debt and deficits, as set out in the Maastricht rules, in the face of asymmetric shocks, and Euroland as not an optimal' currency area. Do these 'flaws' represent major threats to the future of EMU? Or will they be successfully resolved by the European policy authorities, leading to a lasting and prosperous EMU? The authors provide answers to these questions by examining the historical record of monetary unions. They try to extract the key conditions for establishing and for maintaining monetary unions intact. Their main lesson from the history of monetary unions is that political factors will be the central determinants of the future of EMU. The 'economic' shortcomings of EMU will likely be overcome as long as political unity prevails within EMU. |
